The Catholic Foundation was founded by Archbishop Williams in 1981 at a time when the Archdiocese of Wellington was desperate for operating funds. A campaign was launched to attract members to the Foundation, each new member being asked to contribute a sum by way of cash or legacy which would be added to the capital base of the Foundation. Within a month $1 million had been raised and invested.
Initially all the income from the investments was given to the Archdiocese for distribution to its pastoral arms. Judicious investment decisions, new members, and legacies have enabled the initial capital to grow considerably to over $7 million. The income is now sufficient to both make a significant annual grant to the Archdiocese to help with its operating budget, and to make grants to a growing number of Catholic organisations and individuals where there will be benefit to the Catholic life of the Archdiocese. In addition, the Foundation makes a number of tertiary scholarships available to graduating Year 13 students.
Membership of the Foundation is in one of three categories depending on the size of the gift made. The Foundation is managed by a Board made up of members of the Foundation and Archbishop John Dew.
Funds given to the Foundation by members are retained in perpetuity, and will add income to the Foundation for the foreseeable future. What better gift could be made to the church?
